Advantages and Disadvantages of Vinyl Flooring

Looking to make some home renovations? Adding vinyl flooring is an option. It has two primary forms: tile and sheet. A homeowner can learn how to insert the tile on his or her own as it is a fairly simple process. The sheet form is more complicated to install and should therefore be done by a professional. Here is all the information you need to make the decision of whether or not vinyl flooring should be your next home renovation. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of vinyl flooring:

Vinyl flooring is:

  • Inexpensive in comparison to other types of flooring.
  • Softer than other types of flooring.
  • Found in a wide selection of colors and styles.
  • More durable, with a good possibility of lasting for more than 20 years.
  • Resistant to dirt and easy to clean.
  • Able to be installed on top of previous flooring without the other flooring being removed.

Vinyl flooring is:

  • Easy to install on your own, but the process of preparing the floor for the installation can be quite a challenge.
  • A difficult flooring to move furniture without scratching or popping a tile. The furniture needs to have pads to prevent any damage to the flooring.
  • Softer, but has a higher chance of being gouged by sharp objects.
  • An emitter of volatile organic compounds (though this has decreased over the years).

Vinyl flooring will be around for years. Depending on your budget, where you need new flooring, and what type of flooring you want, vinyl may or may not be what you need. Use this list to help you make a good decision.
