Are Hardwood Floors the Best Option?

As people buy homes, sell homes, and renovate their own homes, the flooring is an important feature to consider. Hardwood floors are the most well-liked type of flooring in the U.S., for both renters and homeowners. But despite its popularity, are hardwood floors the best option for every room in every house?

When determining what type of flooring to have in a house, there are many factors you will want to consider. You will need to think through whether you care about the home’s resale value, what your budget allows, your family’s preference, and what people have in the area. Some homeowners with young children want carpet for their kids to play on, others in hot climates prefer tile, and others with smaller budgets want vinyl floors. You will also need to think through the longevity of different types of flooring and the maintenance that it requires.

In a study conducted by the National Association of Realtors, it was discovered that 54% of homebuyers would consider paying more for a home that has wood flooring. Hardwood flooring is more expensive than other types of flooring, at around $10 per square foot. Many homeowners chose to have wood flooring in only specific rooms as opposed to the entire house. But in comparison to carpet, hardwood floors will last an entire home’s duration while carpet has to be replaced every decade or so. Some homeowners that prefer the feel of a carpet will then place area rugs throughout the home to provide the texture they desire.

If you plan on staying in this home for the bulk of your life, choose the flooring that you prefer. Choosing flooring that you only somewhat like, even if it has some great features, risks becoming flooring you really dislike.
