How Owning a Dog Can Affect Your Insurance

When looking for homeowner or renter’s insurance companies, most people would not consider owning a dog to have any effect on which insurance company they chose. However, the majority of insurance companies have a list of dogs that they consider dangerous and problematic. If you own one of these breeds, you could have to pay a higher premium or you may not be accepted at all.

Why are certain dog breeds singled out?

Insurance companies believe that there are dog breeds that are more likely to bite. By not allowing owners of specific dog breeds to be insured by those companies, they will be saving themselves money.

What breeds are considered “dangerous”?

The list of dangerous breeds varies. Insurance companies base their list off of third party studies that have been conducted. As society learns more about particular breeds, the list will change. Some of the most common breeds found on the list are: Pit Bulls, Great Danes, Rottweilers, and Doberman Pinschers. If your dog is on the insurance company’s list, it does not matter whether your particular dog has no previous history of biting someone.

What can you do about it?

Shop around. If the insurance company does not provide insurance for people who own the breed of dog that you have, then you will be forced to find another insurance company. If not, you can:

  1. Choose to accept the higher premium
  2. Continue looking until you find an insurance that does not have your dog on their list
  3. Find an insurance company that does have your dog on the list but still offers a reasonable price

Insurance companies that are advertised as “all breed friendly” tend to be more expensive. Look around until you can find the best deal and always be honest. Tell the insurance company the type of dog you have. By lying, you could cost yourself even more money.
