How to Interview an Architect for a Home Renovation

Wanting to remodel? Just as you should interview a contractor before hiring one, you should also interview the architect who will be completing the remodeling project. You need to ensure that you are hiring the right person for the job. They are going to be responsible for making sure the project is done well and on time. Seven questions to include when you interview an architect are:

  1. What do you (the architect) foresee to be the easy and hard aspects of this project? The architect is going to have a great portfolio with beautiful projects completed. But you want to know how the architect will work through your project. Make sure that their taste and personality aligns with yours.
  2. What is your style? The majority of architects want to be able to complete a wide range of projects with very versatile styles. But the majority of architects have a specialty. Find out what that specialty is and see if that is what you want.
  3. Who will be completing the design work? Most architects have a team that will be working with them. Make sure that you are able to talk to the head architect that completes the design portion of the job. You want the person who is going to be designing and delegating all the work to be on the same page as you.
  4. What services do you provide? You need to find out which services your architect will provide and how much they will cost. An architect may be able to help you with other areas of the project such as: hiring a contractor, managing the project, obtaining waivers, etc.
  5. How much will the project cost? Every architect determines how he or she wants to be paid. Most require a percentage of the project. You need to know when the architect will want to be paid and how those payments should be made.
  6. Can you provide me with a 3-D drawing? Though you can get a fairly good idea of what the layout of the project will be like through a 2-D drawing, a 3-D drawing will provide you with more angles and views. If the architect cannot provide you with these capabilities, you may want to consider finding another architect.
  7. Do you have any recommendations for a general contractor? Having a recommendation for a contractor from an architect that you trust will save you the hassle of having to go through a search starting from scratch. Bid on multiple contractors in order to give yourself options.

Having the right person conducting your remodeling project is going to make the process go much more smoothly. Take your time in picking the right one.
