Should You Replace Your Large Appliances?

An important aspect of home ownership is caring for the home. All homes have large appliances that will wear and tear over time. They each have a different lifespan and it is important to be aware of those time frames. You do not want your air conditioner, boiler, or oven to stop working when you really need it. These estimates are going to help you answer the question: should you replace your large appliances?

  • Boilers are expected to be able to provide hot water anywhere from 10 to 20 years.
  • Washing machines should continue to clean your clothes well for a lifespan of 5 to 15 years.
  • Dryers stay in good form for around 10 years.
  • Refrigerators should continue to be able to keep food cold for 10 to 15 years.
  • Gas ovens are going to last approximately 10 to 15 years.
  • Microwaves will keep working for around 10 years.
  • Freezers will stay functioning for 10 to 20 years.
  • There are two types of air conditioner predictions, one for central air and one for window air. If it’s central air, it could last for 15 to 20 years, while window air conditioners will continue producing cold air for around 5 years.

When trying to sort through the longevity of your large appliances, make sure to consider the factors that would either prolong or shorten the lifespan of the systems. For example, living in San Diego, you are going to be using your air conditioner more than you would living in a cold state. The same appliance may last longer in a different home, depending on the frequency of use, how it is used, where it is used and how it is cared for. Knowing the average age of your appliances will help you predict when it will be time to invest in a new one!
